PheroSyn partners with UK strawberry growers
PheroSyn are delighted to announce a new partnership with farmers and growers to advance PheroSyn’s innovative pollination strategies in UK strawberry production. Strawberries remain the UK’s most valuable fruit crop, worth £377 million in 2022 and representing over 30% of total UK fruit value, supported by an extended growing season enabled by polytunnel production.
Managed pollination, primarily through bumblebees and honeybees, is already widely used across the sector, and emerging pollination enhancing technologies are becoming increasingly important to ensure pollination is consistent across entire cropping areas, including the full length of polytunnels.
Consistent pollination is essential for producing larger, more uniform berries, preventing misshapen or underdeveloped fruit, and increasing both yield and premium grade output.
Through a new 12 month Innovate UK ADOPT Programme project, PheroSyn will deploy its novel pollination-lure strategies with two commercial strawberry producers, building on earlier collaborative work and now extending into commercial environments.
“These commercial partners will drive the real-world use of PheroSyn’s pollination-lure strategies to address shortfalls in managed pollination used in current production methods, which will ultimately lead to a wider role out of this important technology” says PheroSyn CEO, Dr. Mary Ellis.
This partnership marks a major step toward bringing PheroSyn’s first pollination product to market, an exciting and pivotal milestone for the company.
